I was brought up a Christian. My father a vicar, and all my early assumptions based on the teachings of the bible. Dad died when I was in my early 20s. Tragically I can find no solid reason to believe again, it just is too implausible for me to blindly return to my faith. But I know it is the best way to live. I worked in a dementia ward during COVID. The reality is that difficult end of life decisions are made out of practical necessity. The question is how, not if. There's only so many drugs you can give people to keep their quality of life bearable. It's a difficult conversation to have in public, I think most avoid thinking too deeply about the details. The concern for me is heavy handed laws that prescribe euthanasia in the wrong circumstance, or placing the decision in the wrong place. Personally, I've worked with people who seemed to be able to enjoy life, no matter how bad it got, and some that didn't. It's easy to say the doctor should be making that decision, but the doctor isn't the person that knows the person best, the family member usually isn't either, it's the nurses, aides, or someone like me that does activities with them on a daily basis. (Believe it or not, it's activities that ends up being the experts on some quality of life determinations.)

I was brought up a Christian. My father a vicar, and all my early assumptions based on the teachings of the bible. Dad died when I was in my early 20s. Church became a sad place for me, I stopped going, but still prayed and contemplated my faith. But I also listened to other opinions, evidence, points of view. I enquired into the scientific evidence for and against the human soul, life after death, the miracles of Christ etc, and concluded I was probably dealing with a Wizzard of Oz type situation. That all I had been taught, all that I believed and all that I assumed was probably not true and real. This broke my heart, revived my grief for the loss of my father - now my respect for him was dying also. I suffered another bereavement - the death of Christ in my heart. I felt truly alone - I missed my lovely dad, I missed looking up to him and I dearly missed Christ. I am nearly 60 now, and have come to terms with my godless world. I still remember all the teachings and stories from my Christian youth, and hold onto many of them for my personal moral guidance. Because of my godlessness, my children also live entirely godless lives and remain unbaptised, which upsets me. Tragically I can find no solid reason to believe again, it just is too implausible for me to blindly return to my faith. But I know it is the best way to live. Specifically the true Christian way - frankly, Jesus nailed it (no pun). I am starting to think my atheism is a luxury we cannot afford, that my children, their children, the west in general, cannot afford my squeamishness over the scientific unreality of something so huge and ineffable. Maybe I have a moral responsibility to act like I believe, because it is good - not because it is scientifically right?

I worked in a dementia ward during COVID. The reality is that difficult end of life decisions are made out of practical necessity. The question is how, not if. There's only so many drugs you can give people to keep their quality of life bearable. It's a difficult conversation to have in public, I think most avoid thinking too deeply about the details. The concern for me is heavy handed laws that prescribe euthanasia in the wrong circumstance, or placing the decision in the wrong place. Personally, I've worked with people who seemed to be able to enjoy life, no matter how bad it got, and some that didn't. It's easy to say the doctor should be making that decision, but the doctor isn't the person that knows the person best, the family member usually isn't either, it's the nurses, aides, or someone like me that does activities with them on a daily basis. (Believe it or not, it's activities that ends up being the experts on some quality of life determinations.)
